The Archos 605 generation 5 portable media player comes with a convenient Wi-Fi feature, an attribute that offers the fastest and easiest way to access digital entertainment. With full Internet access, the player's Opera browser plug-in offers Adobe Flash support, which lets you access and enjoy YouTube and other Web video sites on your Archos device. By using the player, you can view and post YouTube videos wherever you are with an active wireless connection. In addition to downloading media straight from the Archos content portal, you can stream and watch videos from your home PC or laptop. For added video playback versatility, the player is compatible with MPEG4, AVI, and WMV video files. The player features robust music playback features, too. On-board music file playback capabilities support MP3, CBR, VBR, WMA, protected WMA, and WAV files. To help round out the player's multimedia superiority, the Archos even comes with photo viewing capabilities. JPEG, BMP, and PNG files are 100 percent compatible with the player, and the player can pull up PDFs for portable review -- an ideal means to take bigger documents or e-books in PDF format on the road with you. Because of the Archos's USB 2.0 compatibility, files can be quickly transferred to the device in the absence of a Wi-Fi network connection. Charging the device can also be accomplished with an active USB connection. An AC adapter is sold separately for additional charging options. Other great features include mass storage capabilities, automatic firmware downloads, and a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack. New Free Widget Pack
Archos has launched a new widget pack that is free for the 605. A widget is a piece of software that adds new features to your player. It gives you fun, quick, and easy access to hundreds of tools, right on the device. The package contains seven widgets, including a calculator, a currency converter, a unit converter, news, weather, a note writer, and a data vault. To be able to use the widgets, you need to purchase the Web Browser plug-in (about $30). Then, you can download the free widget pack via Archos.com.

Having owned an Archos 402 Gimni that never gave me any problems, I chose to upgrade to the Archos 605 80gb WIFI. BIG BIG MISTAKE. The battery died within 6 months of purchase, and Archos will not honour their manufacturers warranty (allegedly 12 months) to replace it. You have to buy 'add-ons' to get the cursed thing to play most common video and music files.
I am very disappointed with this effort from Archos, especially their very poor attitude in relation to accepting responsibility for the poor workmanship of the 605. If I want the battery replaced, I am expected (at my own cost) to sent the 605 back to France where a 'technician' will look at it and then provide me with a quote for repairs.
Their customer service is rubbish, and as soon as they realise you want them to take responsibility and fix the Archos you have purchased from them, they stop sending e-mails to you in English and start sending them in French. They accused me of mishandling my device even though I have treated it with kid gloves. How they make this assumption is beyond me when you consider that I have not even sent it back to them.
When the 605 was working, and I had installed the add-ons, it worked well and I was very happy with it. I ceased to be happy with it when the battery died after only 6 months, and Archos customer service refused to fix it.
My message to you - heed the warnings that others have posted here. Don't be fooled by the flashy advertising or over-inflated hype. You would be better served with one of the new portable DVD players (that also play avi and mp4 formats), or a netbook/laptop.

My Archos 605 80GB after a year and a half of nearly no use died sitting on the shelf. Its body is swollen and bursting at the seams. It is probably a faulty battery judging from Archos forums. What a piece of ****.
Aside from that, when I first bought the unit I paid for 2 plug-in. The browser was useless and there was no response from their customer service. I will never buy another Archos product again.

I bought this as a Christmas present for my teen aged son. We subsequently added the web browser and movie downloader plug ins and it now acts as a portable computer for him along (despite being the size of a car GPS)with being an excellent music player. One note, the screen quality is far better than expected, much better than typical of small PDA's.

I wish I had taken heed of the negative reviews...but being stubborn and stupid might I add, I ignored them all the went ahead and poured my money down the drain buying this piece of electronic junk! It is the MOST temperamental gadget I have EVER had the misfortune of owning or using! It freezes for no apparent reason other than a freeze is overdue since the last one about 15 mins ago!! I have at least heeded the advice about Archos's call center and I have not bothered to call or send it back. Life is too short. A lesson has been learnt though. I will NEVER purchase another Archos piece of junk again. A word of advice to anyone still foolish enough to ignore the negative feedback...make sure you carry a paper clip with you everywhere as part of the accessory kit...you will need it for all the constant resets!!!!
