Was good until my phone fell and got dented August 21, 2010 Josel (San Diego, CA) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
It looked good and fits well, not too hard not to soft. Fails however on the most important of all: the sides that should be protecting my iPhone 4's metal sides. The side lining of this case, while I appreciate the ease of fitting in my iPhone 4, is just too soft and too thin. Too soft and thin infact that when my phone fell into my bathroom and hit the tiled floor, the side where it hit the tile got dented. No scratch yes, but dent is unforgivable. It was part of Apple's free bumper or case program.
I bought a $1.99 frosted back generic case on eBay after the incident.
Good product except for rubber edge August 15, 2010 Jimmy (Plano, TX USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The other reviewers pretty much said everything that was needed to be said. For people that stick this in their pocket like myself, it's a little harder to get out since the edge's made of soft rubber instead of hard plastic. Other than that, the product's very nice. The carbon leather back is the same material & texture as a 2008+ BMW M3 carbon leather interior. It has a nice matte finish & is very durable.
Fantastic Case August 12, 2010 M. Culhane 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I switched to the Griffin Reveal Etch after about 3 weeks of using an Apple bumper and I find this to be far superior. Here's why:
The rubber edges give the phone a nice grip that makes it fit nicely in the hand. Although the rubber does feel somewhat lightweight (almost cheap, think Livestrong wristbands...), there doesn't appear to be much risk of the phone falling out. The rubber creates a small lip around the front edge of the phone so that when it's placed on a surface face-down, the glass doesn't come in contact with the surface. While the rubber sides make the case a breeze to install and keep the phone feeling light, the hard back provides protection for the iPhone 4's all-too-fragile glass back. I really like the brushed metal/carbon fiber texture on the back. It looks nice and it doesn't show fingerprints or smudges, which is great.
My main issue with the Apple bumper was with the sizes of the cut-out around the sides of the case, but this is not a problem with the Reveal Etch. The case features large cutouts around the headphone jack and the 30-pin connector, so I haven't had any trouble plugging in my non-Apple headphones and accessories. The ring/silent switch is exposed as well, which makes toggling the switch a breeze. Pressing the volume buttons and the sleep/wake button is easy, as the rubber appears to be a bit thinner in those places. Even the camera cut-out is the perfect size (and the brushed metal back appears to have prevented the camera issues some other cases are causing).
For those worried about the antenna, I've noticed no drop in signal while using this case (in normal use or when applying the "death grip").
This is the perfect case for someone who wants to preserve the thinness and design of the iPhone 4, but still have some protection from damage. While it clearly won't protect the phone as well as some of the more massive cases (with their shock absorption and whatnot), the Reveal Etch will keep the iPhone 4 decently protected and maintain its sleek form.
Very nice case with a fatal flaw (for me). August 11, 2010 Arturo R. Kayser (MIA, FL) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The Griffin Reveal Etch is a handsome case. It even feels great with good quality materials. Unfortunately for me, it has one fatal flaw. The rubber sides do not fit very snug to the phone. It may be okay for some, but everytime I hold the phone, I'm reminded of that fact.
Pros:
- Very nice look and feel
- Adds minimal bulk to the phone
- Good access to phone controls
- Good compatability with connectos and docks
- Provides a good grip to hold iPhone
- Rubber sides do not pick up lint
- No camera flash issues for me
Cons:
- Fitment of rubber sides is loose
- Slighly slow to slide in/out of pockets
- Not 100% confident on case's drop protection
Currently, my favorite iP4 case is the Incipio Silicrylic, but I will be giving the Speck Pixelskin HD and Incipio NGP a shot at the title.
Love it! (One of the free case options for early iPhone 4 adopters) August 9, 2010 Debbie Lee Wesselmann (the Lehigh Valley, PA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I wanted a case that didn't detract or bulk up my new iPhone 4, and this case, one of the freebies Apple offered to iPhone users with reception problems, is simply perfect for my needs. I had purchased a temporary case, Premium Soft Silicone Gel Skin, that served the purpose well, but this case is much, much better. It has a hard, slightly recessed back that hugs the camera lens and soft, comfortable silicone sides to aid your grip. The back edges have a silicone lips to keep the phone from sliding off a surface. The case is held in place by the silicone lip, so any tears might compromise it; however, the edges fit so perfectly that they don't easily pull away, something my temporary case did. Although the silicone areas make certain parts tacky, I have no problem pulling it in and out of my pocket.
Except for the silicone lip, the entire front is unprotected, and except for the camera cut-out, the entire back is covered. The lock/power switch is covered by a raised nub, which allows you to use the button without its being uncovered. Even better, the mute button is easy to reach and use, something that has always been a potential problem with iPhone cases.
As of this writing, the price makes this case a great deal for any iPhone owner, even if you're reading this after Apple has fixed the infamous "death grip" issue. Early cases were expensive and untested; this one is both relatively inexpensive and solid, a good choice for those who want a low-profile case.
