Just fine for audio books... April 10, 2010 ringo (California) I'm a little surprised that people don't like this for audio books. That's what I bought it for, and I have no complaints.
I already owned an mp3 player for tunes, but was looking for a smaller and less complicated one for Librivox's public domain audio books. The Stone works wonderfully.
Pros:
- The tiny size and speaker mean I can clip it to my t-shirt collar as I'm puttering around the house, or lying down and relaxing somewhere - no headphones to worry about.
- My computer (Windows XP) sees it as a drive, so I can drag-and-drop to load it.
- There's a configurable button on top that can be set to any function (for books, "pause" is it. For the gym, I might make that the stopwatch).
- It saves your place if you turn it off, and chapter navigation is easy. There are fast-forward and reverse functions (press-and-hold will make these go faster, thanks to a firmware upgrade that some other reviewers might not have known about).
- Many functions are configurable - the auto-off timer, the above-mentioned configurable button, even the screen orientation.
Cons:
- The tiny screen constrains the navigation, though once you've learned your way around it's not so terrible. I do wish the menu trees were circular instead of linear.
- The battery life is about ten hours, and the charger/cable that comes with it is USB. There are some excellent third-party wall-chargers available, however, that are worth looking for. (I'm not sure why they're bothering with a cable at all - a retractable USB jack wouldn't take up much more room than the current socket.)
- It's possible to have two or more books loaded at once (there is a folder function), but it's not worth the hassle to find your place again if you're switching between them. On the other hand, for taking four books on vacation with you, this works just fine.
The Stone also comes in a speaker-less version and a (different) screen-less version, and I wonder if some of the complainers actually bought those instead. They look almost identical, so buyer beware on that count.
Otherwise, this is highly recommended for MP3 audiobooks.
Small enough December 29, 2009 Bargain shopper (Massachusetts) I like the zen stone plus because it is perfect for the gym not to bulky, downloads music quickly, overall it does what you need if you don't want carrying your other bigger mp3, it is very small and compact.
STONE plus is KILLER August 3, 2009 David Pearson (Michigan) Well, I've been using mine everday. Easy to use, simple pad and menus.
IT HAS A BUILT IN 5 band EQ!
It has a great Microphone to record onto the Stone's harddrive.
The built in speaker is the best part, and it cranks.
I ordered a black one and received a black one. If you go into the menu you will find a 'contrast' adjustment and can turn up brightness for outdoors. (although they could make it a bit brighter)
All in all, this was a great buy!!

I am very happy with sound quality and versatility. It works just like a shuffle which is what I wanted.
What I am really impressed with is the durability. This player has been to 3 continents, suffered from rain, falls and heat. And most grueling, it just survived a full machine wash (pant pocket) and dry and still works perfectly.
For something this small, it packs a big punch January 14, 2009 Love Life (CA, USA) I bought this last year for an extended trip. Wow, it work flawlessly and each time I used it I got about 12 hours of listening, yes I reduced my files. I paid a very low price because the product was being retired. I am still enjoying the unit. It has its flaws, but so do the most expensive players.
