1 out of 5 stars A Cautionary Tale of Plugins   July 8, 2009

While the Archos 705 is a high quality product, I would suggest that the buyer is being ripped off, not because of the high price, but because of the cost of the so-call plugins, which are, in fact, activation codes for things that the device would normally do anyway. It is unreasonable, in my opinion, to have to pay $300 and then another $20-$75 to unlock all the devices features.

No additional programming goes into these plugins save to disable the features that normally would be present until they are purchased.

Let the Buyer Beware.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderfull, BUT far short of 605   April 14, 2009
Bill Zornes (Wilmington, NC USA)
Love the 705! Only problem is I thought I was trading up from my current 605.
Unfortunately that was not the case!
First: What IDIOT came up with the idea that it was a good thing to go from the 16 million color capability in the 4.3" 605 to 260,000 colors on the 7" screen 705 (DAH!!)
Second: AUDIO VOLUME, I should say WHAT AUDIO. With all setting to max for sound the replay volume is almost un-hearable, the internal speakers are useless! Using my new Bose headphones I can just hear the sound, barley usable.
I finally came up with a solution, I bought an amplifier (I think any amp 25+ watt or better will work) and run the source audio through that to the 705.
Third: AUDIO CONFIGURATION FUNCTIONS. Bass Boost from min. to max settings when I'm listening, in a dead silent room (again with new $300.00 Bose CQ-2 headphones, or my Bose Triports), not one iota of difference. Same goes for the five preconfigured sound settings feature, in the custom mode using the 5 band equalizer settings all to min. or max sound exactly the same, listening as you are sliding one after another there is absolutely no change in the sound PERIOD...
I know it sounds bizarre to still say I love it but I do, but very much in "SPITE" of the ridicules downgrades from my, near, perfect 605 (I say near because the volume capabilities of the 605 are not great either, but usable)
Honestly, if "Wonderful" Amazon. com had not had their, usual, extraordinarily low price on this 705 it would be gone by now.
Fourth: Same old compliant everyone has about Archos, that being, when you buy a Wi-Fi capable - video player - music player etc., having, then, to go and buy "PLUGINS" to use these features, well I'll say "stinks", here, but you y'all know what I really mean (well it almost rhymes, and two of the letters ARE the same, right?)
By the way if anyone is thinking, maybe he just got a bad one, that is not the case. I bought and returned one because of the above stated problems, and the new replacement I received back had exactly the same problems, so it is not my 705 but the product itself
FIFTH: The last B...H I have is that the program guide feature they advertise has not been available for months and no one at Archos has a clue as to when (or maybe IF) it will ever be available again! All they have told me, for months, is to keep checking the NEWS marque on their web site and they will let everyone know on that if it starts working again. NO offer to send email to let me know when one of the features I paid for will be available.

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy an Archos product!   April 12, 2009
S. Kellogg (Houston, TX, USA)

If I had it to do over again, I would never have bought an Archos product. And I certainly never will again.

The screen has gone opaque. It is slow in response. The device crashes about every other use. It is buggy; for example, it will only download podcasts intermittently. Almost every feature except playing music requires an outlay of $30 to Archos on their website to download the extra software (actually, it's preloaded, but they charge to enable it) or buy the proprietary cable/chord/interface. In short, the device is so frustrating and slow to use, you'd be better off just flushing your cash down the toilet.

Archos customer service is designed to be as painful as possible ... probably because they recognize that there are numerous issues with the product and if their customer service weren't painful, it would be perpetually swamped. And that if they were willing to give refunds, everyone would send in their Archos and get their cash back and they'd go out of business. I think their business model is to make something that looks good on paper, sell it to people, and then make it impossible to return so they can keep the cash. I guarantee they get no repeat business.

My advice to you: stay away from Archos!!

5 out of 5 stars Archos 705 WiFi   April 6, 2009

Archos 705 Wi-Fi Portable Media Player (160 GB)
This product is what it has been represented as, a great player. The ability to connect to the network was a matter of pushing the icon, quick and easy.Working on learning the ins and outs so far so good.Being more mature I have not noticed a big resolution problem some seem to find.
Suggest this for those who like their own entertainment while traveling. Will look to aquire a DVR docking station for more flexibility in programing. The Web browser is a easy add on.

1 out of 5 stars Too confusing!   March 23, 2009

A friend of mine introdused me to this product and I fell in love, I ordered one the next day. The product looks great and does many different tasks, however...its so confusing! I'm pretty good at figuring out electronics, but this one took the cake. Also, you have to buy plugins to do almost anything on the Archos. Just to get the wifi the plug in is around $50. You also can not transfer dvd's to this device (dvd's have a copywrite protection)...you have to purchace another program from the web to rip the dvd's...another $45. When using the DVR you have to have up-to-date electronics at home. All in all this was just too much for me. I returned it after a week.
