5 out of 5 stars love this player   August 13, 2010

i've broken 2 ipods already so was looking for a small player with less moving parts. i have the small sd chip so i've added an extra 16 gb memory. i feel this player deserves 5 stars for all of the above attributes. extremely small. works well with windows media player to make playlists. more durable than the ipod. provides great sound when connected to an amp & speakers. got it on sale with free super saver shipping. can't ask for much more. over all i am very pleased with this purchase.

3 out of 5 stars Clip+ is nice unit with serious defects   August 12, 2010

I would like to love my Clip+, but it is increasingly difficult. I have had it for about 6 months and have already had to have it replaced once because the disk format became corrupted and it wouldn't boot. But, that is not what disappoints me about this unit.

The good news:

* It is very small and light. You get the basic textual information, which is all I need or care about
* The sound is good, but I am not an audiophile, so my audio needs are pretty relaxed
* It was a good price for the storage size
* It has a microSD slot, which I use to boost the memory from 8GB to 24GB with a 16GB card

The bad news, in priority order

* What has me really hot under the collar is that the Clip+ goes into "refreshing your media" mode for no apparent reason. With about 18GB of music, it takes about 15 minutes to update the internal database. This is annoying but predictable when I add new music, but it seems to do it randomly. My guess is that the problem is with the microSD card, which might not be seated closely enough so that jiggling causes the unit to think that it was reinserted and therefore the database needs to be refreshed. This has become so annoying that I may buy a new player and scrap this one.

* The playlist capability has some severe limitations. I tend to make my own playlists based on a database of my music that I keep on a server. While the Clip+ will play .m3u playlists (which is a very simple format), it is limited to no more than 1,000 songs in the list and they all have to be in the same directory structure. Subdirectories are fine, but the playlist can't span between the internal and external storage

* There is the concept of a GoList, but I have never figured out what it is good for. You can't save the contents of the GoList to a playlist, which would be the obvious use.

Summary

The Clip+ has great physical features, but the shortcomings that I have listed above are driving me to replace it with something that simply works better than this does.

3 out of 5 stars Adequate But Could Be Better   August 11, 2010

I bought this to replace my beloved old Sansa E140 MP3 player(which still works fine) as I wanted more memory capacity. My needs are simple: to play MP3 files while working out at the gym.

The 8 MB Clip + fulfills the basic requirements. It's easy to load files (just drag and drop on your PC) and straightforward to operate. There are a couple of nice features such as several "equalizer" settings, the ability to create playlists, plug-in module capability and an FM tuner (don't count on good reception for anything but the strongest local signals. This is not the MP3 to buy if FM listening is a priority for you).

The clip (much maligned on the original model) seems OK but its just plastic, after all. Be gentle. I was surprised at how tiny this player is - about half the size of an old-fashioned Zippo cigarette lighter.

I have the following criticisms:

a. Battery issues (docked 1 star). The Clip + has a rechargeable and NONREPLACEABLE battery (apparently the norm now). When the battery fails to hold a charge, as it inevitably will eventually, you chuck the whole MP3 player. Right now (near new), it holds enough charge for a weeks' worth of my gym workouts but the jury's still out on this.

It takes a GOOD two hours to completely recharge on my computer's USB port. The display has a battery charge level icon but it doesn't appear to be very linear and, of course, when it decides the battery is too low, it abruptly shuts off.

Another quirk: When I disconnect the unit from my computer's USB port, the display goes dark. Silly me: the first time I assumed the player was therefore off. Not so. You must still push the power off button to actually shut it down; otherwise, it remains in play mode.

b. Useless earpieces (docked 1/2 star). I admit I'm not a fan of "in ear" earpieces (I prefer over-the-ear headphones). But the supplied earpieces I found to be particularly worthless. Even sitting at a desk, I couldn't get them to stay in my ears longer than about five seconds. Totally useless for gym workouts. Figure on buying your own earphones/headphones.

c. Poor documentation (docked 1/2 star). The unit comes only with a single sheet "quick start" instruction page - which doesn't even contain enough information to quick start. To get the full instruction manual, you must go to the Sandisk website (the quick start sheet had the wrong web address) and download it. Call me old fashioned, but it pisses me off to burn up half an inkjet cartridge printing the instructions out. Even my cheapo Casio watch came with a complete (if miniature) manual. Sandisk could sharpen up it's technical writing on the instructions, too.

Other things to know: Before using the unit, go to the Sandisk website and download/install the latest firmware updates. Also, my player came with preloaded "sample music" that you'll want to delete before adding your own.

2 out of 5 stars Battery issues   August 11, 2010

Not much to complain about aside from battery issues. I echo many of the other reviewers: great size and portability, the sound is fine (some reviews rave about the sound - I think it is good but not great). However, my battery life has been very substandard. It seemed to charge and play fine initially. Now, after less than four months, it has trouble holding a charge. I will let it charge by USB until it is fully charged (according to the screen's battery symbol). I will try to use it the next day (no playing in between), but instead of a full charge the battery symbol shows the lowest readout and the unit will barely play before shutting off with a "low battery" screen. So for some reason my battery is not holding a charge or discharging without use. I have seen this behavior in other players (like my iPod) and it means the battery is about to completely die. As I said, this after less than four months of very light use, zero abuse and I have never overcharged it (if that is even possible). I am outside the 30 day return window (according to Amazon). So buyer beware - just hope you get a decent battery. If not for the battery issue (a huge "if", of course) it is worth buying.

I should say that battery life was adequate but never approached the 15 hours claimed. I keep the LED screen light set for very short duration and volume at a moderate level and I never got close to 15 hours. I know they say "up to 15" so you figure at least 10. Mine was never more than eight and that is even a bit generous. Many players tout 15 hours and don't come close so this was never a terrible surprise but I had hoped for better due to the lack of a spinning hard disk. Even so, I had expected two years plus performance from the Sansa 8 GB Clip + and therefore have been very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic value for the price   August 11, 2010

I bought this to serve as an mp3 player to hook on a belt loop while I work in the lab, and this product works perfectly for that purpose. If you're looking for something that is small, inexpensive, great quality, with a radio tuner and the potential to expand the memory through the use of a microSD card, this is a great prduct to consider. I would and have recommended it to others. Why pay for the Apple brand name when you can get a great product that includes much more for cheaper?
